RENTAL HOME INTERIOR DESIGN IN ZUG SWITZERLAND

Temporary Oasis

260122-12.jpg

Our clients were living in a generously proportioned rental home in Zug, Switzerland, while searching for their permanent residence. Recognising that the journey might take time, they chose to invest in thoughtful interior design to transform their temporary address into a fully realised home. Engaged to deliver full-service residential interior design without structural alterations, we curated timeless, well-scaled furnishings that could transition seamlessly into a future property. A layered Australian- inspired coastal-neutral palette of soft blues and cool greys established a sense of cohesion and calm from room to room.

THE DESIGN BRIEF

The brief focused on creating a sense of permanence within a temporary setting — working entirely through furnishings, materials, and proportion. The following spaces illustrate how this strategy was applied throughout the home.

PROJECT SCOPE

OPEN PLAN LIVING & DINING

The open-plan living and dining area called for character without permanent alteration to the property. As full wallpaper installation was not permitted, pattern was introduced to the back of a bespoke display cabinet — adding depth and visual interest in a fully reversible way. The intervention not only provided much-needed storage for a busy space, but also introduced colour and personality within an otherwise restrained envelope. The result is a calm, considered space where subtle pattern brings warmth and individuality to a minimalist framework.

Flexibility guided our furnishing strategy in the living area. A modular L-shaped sofa was selected for its ability to be reconfigured, ensuring adaptability for a future home. The modular configuration is complemented by a corner ottoman that allows the seating arrangement to shift between classic and contemporary compositions. A tonal outdoor rug softens the generous proportions of the room while offering durability and acoustic comfort. Pattern and texture were introduced through layered textiles, allowing the larger neutral pieces to remain timeless. The result is a space that feels warm, resilient, and inherently adaptable.

PRIMARY SUITE

The primary suite was designed as a place to slow down. The room is composed of just four essential pieces — a generous bed, light oak bedside tables, and a made-to-order sideboard for storage — allowing proportion and material to take the lead. Personal photography brings depth and meaning without adding visual noise. Lighting was carefully considered to minimise harsh shadows, using shaded lamps and tinted bulbs to create a softer atmosphere. A hand-knotted wool rug anchors the bed and adds warmth underfoot, making the room the perfect "soft place to fall."

LIBRARY LANDING

The stair landing was reimagined as a functional workspace with a secondary reading corner. We positioned the desk toward the window allowing the view to shape the layout from the outset. An existing armchair was retained and paired with considered lighting and textile layers for comfort, while corner shelving introduces both storage and displays mementos. The composition is light and practical, anchored by a custom cane desk chair made in Valencia that brings texture and warmth to the setting.

MAIN HOME OFFICE

Designed for a client running a business from home, this office needed to support long, focused days. Without structural changes, the room was reorganised through colour and furnishing to define four distinct zones. While the primary desk area remains private, the lounge and formal seating areas illustrate the strategy.

A generously scaled sofa creates a secondary sitting space for meetings or a change of pace. An accent Farrow & Ball tone and custom divider reshape the fireplace corner into a relaxed lounge, adding storage and lighting in the process. Dark furniture and repeated materials create cohesion, while repositioning the existing rug anchors both zones. We even managed to create a dining area!
