Welcome to my (not so) Humble Abode

This new-build apartment gave us a wonderful opportunity to become involved long before construction began. Working alongside the client's architects, we refined lighting and floor plans, developed the interior concept and selected the materials, finishes and custom elements that would shape the home from the ground up.

The completed project brings those early planning decisions together with a full furnishing concept developed around our client's active way of life. Designed for an international client who chose this part of Switzerland for its proximity to the mountains and outdoor lifestyle, every space was tailored to support the way she truly lives — from entertaining after a day outdoors to creating a private wellness retreat and a dedicated sewing atelier to recharge after a long day at work.

THE HEART OF THE HOME

The heart of the home presented one of the project's greatest design challenges. Within a relatively compact footprint, the space needed to accommodate a generous kitchen island, a dining table for entertaining, a welcoming living area, integrated storage and display, and a cherished piano—all while maintaining an open and uncluttered feel.

Rather than relying on physical dividers, we approached the space through planning, proportion and lighting. From the earliest stages of the project, the layout was carefully refined so that every zone could perform its own function while remaining visually connected to the rest of the home.

Ambient lighting became one of our defining design tools. Rather than simply illuminating the space, each decorative and task fixture was positioned to establish its own destination within the open-plan layout. Together, they create subtle boundaries that distinguish the kitchen, dining and living areas while preserving the openness that was so important to the client.

The apartment's architecture presented another opportunity. With its angular floor plan and strong geometric window lines, we deliberately introduced furniture with softer, organic silhouettes. Curved forms balance the architecture, reducing visual tension and allowing the interior to feel more relaxed and welcoming without competing with the building itself.

A THOUGHTFUL ARRIVAL

The entrance plays a central role in this home. Visible from almost every angle of the open-plan living space, it needed to be far more than a practical place to store coats and shoes. It had to become a design feature in its own right while concealing everyday items.

Rather than treating the hallway as a separate space, we designed it as an extension of the home's overall material palette. Bespoke joinery conceals generous storage behind clean architectural lines, while the vertical walnut detailing continues through to the private areas of the apartment creating a natural transition between the social and private spaces, introducing warmth and improved acoustic comfort along the way.

Every element was selected with intention. A sculptural flush ceiling lamp sourced from Sweden acts almost like a piece of jewellery within the composition, while the reupholstered bench adds a meaningful touch and a practical spot before heading out or returning home. Together, these considered details transform a functional circulation space into an elegant introduction to the home.

THE PRIVATE RETREAT

From the very beginning, our client had a clear vision for her private suite. After long working days, she wanted to come home and feel as though she had stepped into a boutique wellness retreat—a place to relax and recharge.

One of our favourite design decisions was replacing traditional doors with a curved ceiling-mounted curtain. It allows the bedroom, dressing area and wellness space to flow naturally into one another, creating a softer transition between the spaces and reinforcing the relaxed atmosphere our client had imagined from the very beginning.

During the concept phase, we drew inspiration from our client's favourite holiday destinations but rather than recreating those places literally, we focused on the atmosphere they evoke. Large-format botanical tiles, natural materials and a cool green palette capture that feeling without becoming overly thematic.

The existing ensuite gave us the opportunity to think differently about the layout. Instead of creating a second bathroom, we integrated a private sauna into the master suite, turning the space into a place dedicated to everyday wellbeing.

DESIGN AROUND PASSION - THE ATELIER

It was very important for our client to dedicate a space to the hobby she enjoys most. Embroidery is her creative outlet, and from the very beginning she wanted an organised, inspiring room where she could spend hours creating, surrounded by everything she needed.

We didn't design around a guest who visits twice a year. We designed around the person who lives here every day.

Every design decision revolved around the way the room would be used. Several machines, including one particularly large piece of equipment, needed to be accommodated without compromising the sense of space. We repurposed an existing island, refinished it to match existing grey-blue units and positioned it at the centre of the room, grounding the atelier, providing generous storage, additional seating and the freedom to move comfortably around every side. We also reupholstered one of the client's heirloom chairs in a bold blue paisley fabric, proving that familiar pieces are design opportunities.

Lighting completed the space. A geometric gold pendant anchors the room, while layered task lighting ensures every detail can be seen clearly. Muted rose colour drenching, warm gold accents, cool grey-blue cabinetry and the use of beige instead of white create an uplifting room that celebrates creativity.
