FULL HOME RENOVATION & FURNISHING IN WILEN BEI WOLLERAU SWITZERLAND

Hillside

At Hillside Wollerau, we partnered with a general contractor to complete the full renovation of a charming four-bedroom family residence. Over the course of eight months, the property was comprehensively reimagined — from structural material selections and architectural finishes to spatial planning, lighting design and a complete furnishing concept.

Every element was coordinated and delivered as one cohesive vision, allowing the clients to move into a fully realised home.

THE DESIGN BRIEF

Our clients purchased what could best be described as a “renovator’s delight” — a property full of potential but lacking direction. Entering a new phase of life with grown children who visit often and extended family overseas, they envisioned a home that would serve as both personal retreat and welcoming gathering place.

The challenge was not only the scale of renovation, but the orchestration of it. The homeowners did not wish to complete construction and then begin the design process; they wanted to move directly into the finished result — fully renovated, fully furnished and entirely move-in ready.

We guided the project from structural material selection and spatial planning through project administration, procurement and delivery to final installation. The result is an open, bright and welcoming interior that balances modern clarity with warmth, comfort and long-term functionality — a home designed for the next chapter.

PROJECT SCOPE

OPEN PLAN LIVING AND DINING

In the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, we defined each zone through tonal contrast and material clarity while maintaining overall cohesion. The kitchen cabinetry introduces depth in a warmer shade of white, paired with a waterfall island in engineered quartzite with integrated storage.

A traditional hutch was retained to subtly divide dining and living, preserving character while reinforcing spatial structure.

The living area is grounded by a hand-knotted rug and layered with brushed chrome accents, marble and linen. The layout was designed for flexibility and clear sightlines to the television from both kitchen and living — essential for a sports-focused household.

Despite its openness, the space remains composed, functional and visually restrained.

THE STUDY

With one of the homeowners working in higher education, an organised, functional and composed home office was essential. The space was anchored by a rosewood desk — a singular statement piece around which simplicity of the entire room was structured.

To maintain visual restraint while maximising storage, we introduced floor-to-ceiling wrap-around cabinetry in white, combining closed storage and open shelving. This eliminated the need for freestanding filing cabinets and preserved clean lines.

The walls were painted in a deep Farrow & Ball green tone to frame the desk and the outdoor greenery. A subtle line detail between ceiling and walls reinforces cohesion, while a low-pile hand-knotted wool rug allows the desk chair to move effortlessly.

Positioned facing the largest window, the desk benefits from natural light — ideal for video calls — while full-height drapery adds softness and timeless balance to the space.

TRANSITION AREAS AND STAIRCASE

A central staircase connects the three levels of the home. To establish visual continuity, we introduced a bold accent wall in Farrow & Ball’s Salon Drab — a deep, grounding tone that anchors the vertical circulation and creates cohesion between floors.

The existing handrail was preserved and refreshed, its warmth informing the selection of a large mirror positioned opposite. Acting almost as a secondary light source, the mirror reflects natural light into what would otherwise be a darker passage.

Along the hallway, a family gallery wall introduces personal narrative. Timeless black frames were selected for their restraint, subtly echoing elements of the staircase while allowing the collection to evolve over time.

The result is a sequence of transition spaces defined by structure, contrast and meaning.

MASTER BEDROOM AND ENSUITE

The primary bedroom was conceived as a restorative retreat for a couple with demanding schedules and long commutes. Although the suite includes a dedicated ensuite, one of the homeowners wished to integrate a freestanding bathtub directly within the bedroom — fully exposed and intentionally positioned as part of the living space.

This decision transforms the room from a conventional sleeping area into a private sanctuary. A large natural-fibre rug anchors the layout, while elongated curtain hems and layered materials — linen, mohair, varied wood finishes and soft mineral tones — introduce depth without clutter. An evocative artwork adds a personal reference point, grounding the space in memory as well as comfort.

The adjoining ensuite continues the architectural clarity, clad in large-format travertine slabs that emphasise scale and restraint.

The result is a suite defined by proportion and material precision — intimate, balanced and purposeful.

BATHROOM DESIGN

When it came to bathroom design, we kept the same flooring as in the rest of the home allowing us to choose bold wall finishes while still keeping a harmonious flow. In the bathrooms that are accessible by guests more often, we decided on large Calacatta gold tiles for interest whilst in the more private bathrooms _ as you saw in the master bedroom, we opted for unpolished travertine, aiming for that calming aesthetic our clients were after. We kept accessories to a minimum focusing on functionality and used rustic materials like wood and ceramic for extra warmth.
